Divot filling procedure
Filling divots is an important practice for the health and appearance of your fairways and filling them correctly is just as important. If you remove a large divot that is in one piece with plenty of soil accompanying it then that divot should be replaced and stepped down with your foot to ensure good soil contact, no sand would be necessary in this case. If you remove a divot that breaks apart and does not have much soil with it then that divoted area should be filled with the sand bottle provided on your golf cart. Properly filling that divot with sand is also a procedure that requires a bit of care. The divot should be filled level with the existing turf and should provide a level-playing surface. A filled divot is not considered a ground under repair situation so if your ball lands in a filled or unfilled divot it must be played in tournament situations this is one reason to fill them level. Overfilling a divot also results in more dead turf, as the sand that spills on to the unaffected area will burn the grass in the summer heat this obviously results in a larger area than just the original divot. Under filling a divot will not allow the turf to heal properly and also will not bury the weed seeds that lay in wait in the soil to break through thus causing unsightly weeds in your fairways. Thank you for your consideration in this matter and as always feel free to contact me at 410-252-8484 ext. 140 or dhall@tgcc.net
